This is not a hardcore course where you will suffer suffering and hardship.

Arctic Survival - A real challenge in winter conditions

Note: This course requires at least 4 participants. 

Want to experience a real winter? Then this winter Survival course is highly recommended.

This is a collaboration between Bushpappa and Karu Survival.

Finland belongs to the boreal zone, where each year is divided into four seasons. Winter begins in November and ends in late March or April. Winters in eastern Finland are cold and there is snow, lots of snow. The temperature is usually below zero throughout the winter. On the coldest days, temperatures can drop as low as -30 degrees Celsius. 

During the Arctic Survival course, you improve your skills in challenging and icy survival situations. You will learn about the psychology, rules of the game and risks of survival and , and you will practice making a shelter, survival signals and first aid.

Who is the course for?

For experienced outdoor enthusiasts who want to improve their skills in challenging winter survival conditions. A winter survival situation means an unexpected crisis in cold conditions in nature, where you must be able to survive with only the available equipment and tools.

During this week, you will learn the following skills:

  • Psychology of Survival
  • Basic rules of Survival
  • Risks and preparing for them
  • Special characteristics of a winter environment and how to prepare for them
  • Hypothermia and frostbite
  • Temporary shelters and how to make them
  • How to use temporary equipment
  • Different ways of making fire and giving signals
  • Nutrition and hydration
    First aid in case of accidents
  • Small group dynamics in a crisis
  • Pulling a rescue sled with skis and or snowshoes

Programme:

  • DAY 1. Sunday / Arrival: Transportation to the hut. Safety lecture, gear check, presentation of the training area and hygiene, winter first aid lecture, late evening meal. Overnight stay in the Hunting Lodge.
  • DAY 2. Monday / Fundamentals of Survival: Psychology of survival, survival mindset, ski exercise 1, fire in winter conditions. Overnight in the Hunting Lodge.
  • DAY 3. Tuesday / Skis, snowshoes and first aid: ski exercise 2, snowshoes and how to make one from nature. First aid: frostbite and hypothermia. How to sleep in winter conditions. Accommodation in the Hunting Lodge.
  • DAY 4. Wednesday / Survival workshop Day 1: Ski exercise 3, fire in winter 2: night fire, water from snow, survival shelter 1. Overnight stay in survival shelter.
  • DAY 5. Thursday / Survival workshop Day 2: Open fire cooking, ice fishing, lodging in survival shelter 2. Overnight stay in survival shelter.
  • DAY 6. Friday / Survival workshop Day 3: Aid signalling, evacuation, temporary stretchers, EndEx, Overnight in the Hunting Lodge.
  • DAY 7. Saturday: Packing, cleaning up and leaving for Joensuu.

This course includes:

  • All meals from Sunday afternoon until Saturday lunch.

If you do not have the right equipment, you can rent it from us, excluding clothing. This includes sleeping bag, hammock, tarp and sleeping mat. If you want to rent equipment, you can indicate this on the booking form you will receive after booking this trip. 

After registration, you will receive a packing list with the required equipment and additional information about the trip and the flight(s) and/or train(s) to be booked.
