5-Day Navigation Course South Sweden (Snogeholm) 14 April to 18 April 2027

Do you want to navigate confidently and independently without relying on GPS, your phone or other technology? During this intensive 5-day navigation course in the Snogeholm area of South Sweden, you will learn how to use map and compass in realistic outdoor conditions.

Snogeholm is located in Skåne, within reach of Malmö, and offers an excellent setting for practical navigation training. With forests, lakes, open areas, trails, shorelines and varied terrain, the area gives you plenty of opportunities to develop your skills step by step. Our basecamp is the starting point for each day’s training and field exercises.

Over five days, we spend as much time outside as possible. You will learn how to plan routes, read topographic maps, use a compass and determine your position in unfamiliar terrain. We practise on trails, in woodland and off-trail. The focus is not only on technique, but also on staying calm, making decisions and building trust in your own judgement.

An important part of the course is navigating in different conditions. We practise during the day and at night, when many familiar landmarks become harder to see and accurate map-and-compass work becomes even more important. One full course day is dedicated to canoe navigation. From the water, you will learn how to hold a course, estimate distances and use shoreline features to stay oriented.

The course is highly practical. Short theory sessions are followed immediately by exercises in the field. This way, you learn not only how navigation works, but how to apply it confidently when you are actually outdoors.

This course is suitable for:

  • Hikers who want to improve their navigation skills.
  • Future or practising Mountain Leaders who want to refresh their skills.
  • Bushcrafters and outdoor enthusiasts who want to become more self-reliant.
  • Anyone preparing for a trek, journey or expedition.
  • People who want to be less dependent on digital technology.

What will you be able to do after this course?

After five intensive days of learning and practice, you will be able to:

  • Plan and follow routes independently without GPS.
  • Read and interpret maps by day and night.
  • Work with map and compass on land.
  • Navigate by map and compass from a canoe.
  • Determine your position in unfamiliar terrain.
  • Move confidently off-trail.
  • Make route choices based on terrain, distance and conditions.
  • Respond to disorientation and emergency situations.
  • Make an emergency fire for warmth and signalling.
