Product description

Safe drinking water from a stream, lake or rain barrel, wherever you are? The Lifesaver Lifeline Straw is a personal water filter in straw form that lets you drink directly from virtually any freshwater source. For hikers, bushcrafters, survival enthusiasts and travellers, clean drinking water is the most essential resource on the trail, and also the heaviest to carry. With this compact filter straw weighing just 85 grams, you turn even murky water into safe drinking water on the spot, without hauling litres on your back.

The Lifesaver Lifeline Straw uses a 2-stage filtration system combining ultrafiltration and activated carbon. The main filter removes 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.99% of parasites and microplastics, and also filters sediment out of turbid water. The filter meets the stringent NSF/ANSI P231 standards for water purification. The replaceable activated carbon filter (100 litre capacity) additionally reduces chemicals and unpleasant odours, so your water is not only safe but also tastes better. Thanks to FailSafe technology, the filter automatically blocks the water flow once it reaches the end of its lifespan: you can never unknowingly drink through an exhausted filter.

In use, the Lifeline Straw is refreshingly simple: no chemicals, no batteries and no power required. You drink directly through the straw at a flow rate of roughly 0.5 litres per minute. With an impressive 5,000 litre capacity, the main filter lasts for years, even with intensive use. The practical protective caps keep the mouthpiece and inlet hygienic while stored in your backpack or emergency kit, and the BPA- and BPS-free material makes the filter safe for daily use. Want to make the straw even more versatile? Accessories such as the Lifeline Gravity water bag and the Lifeline Squeeze pouch let you drink comfortably around camp, while the Lifeline Replacement Cartridge and Lifeline activated carbon filters keep your system performing at its best.

Planning a multi-day trek, spending a weekend at a bushcraft camp or building an emergency kit for your home? Then the Lifesaver Lifeline Straw is an investment that pays for itself time and again. You save weight, stay independent of bottled water and always have a reliable source of drinking water at hand. Order the Lifesaver Lifeline Straw today and drink with confidence wherever the trail takes you.

Does this straw filter viruses?

The Lifesaver Lifeline Straw does not filter viruses, and that is not a shortcoming but a deliberate design choice rooted in physics. Viruses are many times smaller than bacteria, parasites or sediment. To block them mechanically, the pores of the filter membrane would have to be so fine that water only passes through when it is forced with considerable pressure, for example using a hand pump or your body weight on a press bottle. The Lifeline works purely on the suction of your mouth, and that simply is not strong enough to draw water through a virus-tight membrane. A virus membrane in a straw would make drinking nearly impossible.

Be wary, therefore, of compact filter straws that do promise full virus filtration: the underlying physics makes that hard to deliver in this format. If you genuinely want protection against viruses, you need a system with more filtration pressure, such as a press bottle (Grayl Geopress or Grayl Ultrapress) or a filter with a hand pump (Lifesaver Wayfarer). For protection against bacteria and parasites, however, this straw with its 99.9999% rating is an excellent, ultralight choice.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does the Lifesaver Lifeline Straw work?
You use the Lifeline Straw like a drinking straw: place the end in the water source and drink through the mouthpiece. The 2-stage filtration system first passes the water through an ultrafiltration membrane that blocks bacteria, parasites, microplastics and sediment, and then through the activated carbon filter that reduces chemicals and unpleasant odours. No chemicals, batteries or power are involved.

Does the Lifeline Straw also filter viruses?
No, this filter straw does not block viruses, and that is a deliberate design choice. Viruses are so small that water has to be forced through a virus-tight membrane using a pump or body weight, whereas a straw works only on the suction of your mouth. Against bacteria and parasites, however, the Lifeline offers excellent protection with its 99.9999% rating; if you also want to filter viruses, look at a press bottle or pump system.

In which regions can I safely use the Lifeline Straw?
In temperate regions such as Europe, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, the risk of water contamination lies mainly with bacteria and parasites, for example from faecal matter in ground or surface water. There, this straw with its 99.9999% rating offers ample and reliable protection against illness. If you travel to areas where viral contamination of drinking water is more common, such as parts of Asia and Africa, choose a system that also blocks viruses, such as the Grayl press bottles or the Lifesaver Wayfarer.

What accessories are available for the Lifeline Straw?
You can expand the straw with handy accessories that make it even more versatile. The Lifeline Gravity water bag lets you fill a larger supply that flows through the filter on its own, while the Lifeline Squeeze pouch is ideal for squeezing water through on the move. For maintenance, the Lifeline Replacement Cartridge and the replaceable Lifeline activated carbon filters keep your system performing reliably and your water tasting fresh.

How much water can I purify with this filter?
The main filter has a capacity of 5,000 litres, which lasts for years under normal use. The activated carbon filter has a capacity of 100 litres and is easy to replace, so the taste improvement stays consistent. For most hikers and bushcrafters, that means hundreds of trips with a single filter.

What happens when the filter is worn out?
The Lifeline Straw features FailSafe technology: once the end of its lifespan is reached, the filter automatically blocks the water flow. You can therefore never unknowingly drink unsafe water through an exhausted filter. That is a major safety advantage over filters without such a mechanism.

Can I drink turbid water with this filter?
Yes, the Lifeline Straw filters sediment and microplastics from turbid water in addition to bacteria and parasites. Pre-settling the water (letting it stand briefly) does help extend the filter's lifespan. That way you get the most out of the 5,000 litre capacity.

Does the filter also improve the taste of the water?
Yes, the included activated carbon filter reduces chemicals and unpleasant odours, making the water taste fresher and more neutral. This carbon filter has a 100 litre capacity and is replaceable. Even water from less inviting sources stays perfectly drinkable.

Is the Lifeline Straw suitable for an emergency kit?
Absolutely, with a dry weight of 85 grams, compact dimensions of 22 x 5 x 5 centimetres and long storage life, this filter is ideal for emergency kits, bug-out bags or vehicle kits. The protective caps keep the filter hygienic during long-term storage. That way you are prepared for situations where tap water is temporarily unavailable or unreliable.

How do I maintain the filter?
Flush the filter with the cleanest water available after use and let it dry before putting the protective caps back on. Replace the activated carbon filter once its 100 litre capacity is reached or when you notice a change in taste. Store the filter dry and frost-free for maximum lifespan.

Is the material safe for daily use?
Yes, the Lifesaver Lifeline Straw is completely BPA- and BPS-free. The filter also meets the stringent NSF/ANSI P231 standards for water purification, an independent standard for microbiological water purifiers. You can use it daily with complete confidence.

How quickly will my order be shipped?
Orders placed on business days before 5:00 PM are shipped the same day. That means your water filter arrives quickly and you can head out without delay. Handy when you want to complete your kit just before a trek or camp.
