One-day navigation course

After receipt of your deposit you will receive from us the other information about the trip, course, workshop or package, Such as a packing list with the necessary equipment and additional information about the route and eventually the flight(s) and/or train(s) to be booked. You will also receive an application form.
Are you often outdoors and would you like to be (more) independent when you're out and about, or do you want to be able to find your way at any time, regardless of the weather and whether you're at home or abroad, without having to rely on your phone, for example because the battery is dead?
The navigation course focuses primarily on teaching you the basics of navigating with a map and compass.
You will learn what makes a good map, how to use a compass and various techniques for getting from A to B. We will also discuss the difference between navigating in the Netherlands and, for example, in the mountains or in North America. By the end of the day, you will be confident enough to find your way without Google Maps and can set off with confidence.
Techniques and skills we cover
- Understanding maps and compasses. What to look for in a good map, how a compass works, and what to consider when purchasing these materials.
- Different techniques for using a compass, such as translating the environment to your map and setting the information from the map in your compass.
- Calculating the number of degrees to walk, so that you can walk to your destination as efficiently as possible.
- Checking whether we are on the right path by using our compass to determine the number of degrees it runs and comparing this with the map.
- Translating given coordinates to positions on the map.
- Finding out your coordinates by means of cross-bearing, so that you know where you are on the map.
- Working with step size and walking speed to make sure you take the right turn.
The navigation course will take place in the Waterleidingduinen near Zandvoort. This is a unique area where we are also allowed to walk off the beaten track. Super cool, and it allows us to practise optimally. We will start indoors at restaurant De Duinrand, where we will cover the theory while enjoying coffee or tea.
